graduated magna cum laude from Paier College of Art, Hamden, CT, with a BFA in Illustration. She has 23 years of professional experience as an illustrator and designer in the fields of advertising and publishing.
Laura has a passion for illustrating children's trade books that focus on natural history, wildlife or the environment. Her books have won several awards and honors. She has illustrated many children's stories and her artwork has appeared in both Weekly Reader and the National Wildlife Federation's children's magazine, Your Big Backyard. She is a member of SCBWI, the Society Of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
During 2001-2002, Laura was also a part time art teacher for students in an elementary school and a middle school in Western Massachusetts. She has been a paid speaker for convention, children's museum, classroom, library, and teacher groups, giving presentations about the creative process of illustrating children's stories and trade books.
Laura has designed and illustrated a variety of products for the stationery and gift markets, with vendors including Disney, Michaels and Party City. These products include seasonal and everyday themes for invitations and thank you notes, journals, albums, gift wrap, gift bags, gift tags, sticker novelties, laser papers and scrapbooking kits. She also had the opportunity to design several seasonal and everyday stuffed animal characters for the plush market, as well as dabbling in textile print design.
Other interests include playing guitar, singing, camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and boating. At one time, Laura, her husband and two daughters owned and operated a campground on 26 acres in northeastern Connecticut. They featured "theme weekends" that included live music and entertainment, luaus with pig roasts, 50's sock hops, western hoedowns, clambakes, lobsterfests and poolside wine and cheese tasting. Design and illustration of all internal and external advertising and promotional materials were also a large part of her job at that time.
And since realistic depiction of animals and people have always been her favored subjects, Laura enjoys painting and drawing portraits of adults, children and their pets.
